"Zodiac Point" Solution

This one ended up being fundamentally the simplest point that we solved (maybe a tie with the "Willow Cove Point"). It helped that we took a simple approach to it, whereas we severely over-thought many of these other points. It also helped that we had spent a lot of hours on the 2013 Ginter Code, because there was a similar mechanism in play.

For your entertainment ... I present you with a full Google Chat History between Jim and I. :)

Grant Miller
FWIW ... my suspicion here is something with birthday + card number combos9:10 PM
But I don't care9:10 PM

Jim Melichar
ok9:15 PM
why do you think that9:16 PM

Grant Miller
Why? Because it's a set, and that implies it doesn't necessarily have an order9:19 PM
I think I've got it9:20 PM
Proximity of card number to birthday9:21 PM
I have only checked 4 cards9:21 PM
But every one of those 4 ... birthday is within just a few days of card #9:21 PM
Dickey, 300, Oct 299:22 PM

Jim Melichar
ok9:22 PM
so you'll need someone not in this set9:22 PM

Grant Miller
Baker, 171, June 159:22 PM
Medlen, 286, October 15 or something9:22 PM

Jim Melichar
is there a pattern to the days or card numbers?9:22 PM
oh9:22 PM

Grant Miller
Not sure9:22 PM

Jim Melichar
one for every month?9:22 PM
duh9:22 PM
129:22 PM

Grant Miller
Right9:22 PM
Not every month9:23 PM

Jim Melichar
no?9:23 PM

Grant Miller
Probably Zodiac or something9:23 PM
Two Octobers already9:23 PM

Jim Melichar
ok, fair enough9:23 PM
what are they?9:23 PM
before and after the 23rd?9:23 PM

Grant Miller
Yep9:23 PM

Jim Melichar

Grant Miller
You got any time?9:24 PM

Jim Melichar
all the time in the world9:24 PM

Grant Miller
I can't for another 30 min or so9:24 PM

Jim Melichar
but no data9:24 PM
do you have the data?9:24 PM

Grant Miller
I am literally using COMC on my phone9:24 PM

Jim Melichar
ok, i can do this9:24 PM
stop9:24 PM
i'll do it9:24 PM
he's saying there's a hashtag from it?9:25 PM

Grant Miller
Trick is figuring out the hashtag9:25 PM
Right9:25 PM

Jim Melichar
ok9:25 PM

Grant Miller
He implies you'll know it though9:25 PM
Hmmm9:25 PM
This is it Jimmy9:29 PM
Josh Donaldson, 337, Dec 89:29 PM
Hey, you around?9:36 PM
"Don't be rash with that hashtag. You'll probably know it before all the pieces fall into place."9:36 PM
PISCES9:37 PM
I bet your hashtag is something along those lines9:37 PM

Jim Melichar

Grant Miller
Can't believe it was the first thing we tried9:42 PM
Ruth 20 is Aquarius?9:43 PM

here's an update9:45 PM
via email9:45 PM

@#@#@# formatting9:45 PM
sorry9:45 PM

Grant Miller
Aquarius starts Jan 219:46 PM
Ruth is 209:46 PM
That's my problem9:46 PM
Card # and Birthday need to be in same sign9:47 PM
I think9:47 PM

Jim Melichar
that's what i'm saying grant9:48 PM
they change/move9:48 PM
i remember this from the 2010 code9:48 PM
there's all sorts of lists of start and end dates9:48 PM
otherwise it breaks down9:49 PM

Grant Miller
Good9:51 PM
That one works9:51 PM
Ok9:51 PM
I bet we just need a card9:51 PM
And #pisces9:51 PM
Thoughts?9:51 PM

Jim Melichar
hmmm9:52 PM
i was hoping each difference would give a number between 1 and 129:52 PM

Grant Miller
That would be too much9:52 PM
Just has to fit the pattern of being in same sign9:53 PM

Jim Melichar
yup9:53 PM
yup9:53 PM
no one in this set9:53 PM
so we have to look through birthdays of every other set9:53 PM

Grant Miller
Verified that?9:53 PM

Jim Melichar
for card numbers9:53 PM

Grant Miller
Did you verify there's no one in 2014 set?9:53 PM

Jim Melichar
he said it's not9:54 PM
no one in this set will do it9:54 PM
he says9:54 PM

Grant Miller
I know9:54 PM
But it's confirmation that it's Zodiac9:54 PM
Not something else9:54 PM

Jim Melichar
so between here hold on9:54 PM
between card number 51 and 809:55 PM
in each set9:55 PM
someone with a Picses bday9:55 PM
can we split this up9:55 PM
what do you want me to bother checking that's wasting our head start? :)9:55 PM

Grant Miller
What is the hashtag?9:55 PM

Jim Melichar

In case the chat was hard to follow ... we noted that the 11 cards we were given, all were such that the birthdays and card numbers (converted to Month/Day, e.g. Card #1 --> January 1) on each card both fell within the same Zodiac sign. The only one missing was Pisces. So we had to find a card from a different year of Ginter that satisfied the rule of the card number and birthday both being roughly between Feb 21 and Mar 21, or 52 and 80. We submitted the card below, along with hashtag #pisces, and scored the point.

  1. For the record you can view how sick in the head I am from the 2010 and 2013 code. "Are the October birthdays before and after the 23rd?" Too funny. I'd forgotten about this point in terms of the quick solve timeline.

  2. I took the night off to try to be a good husband. Wrong night for that! :)

  3. Yup, we had to install the 5-9pm code blackout period. Otherwise Grant and I would be raising our 16 children together somewhere in indiana talking about "back when we were married" while we sat around building our Poem Point Beautiful Mind room.
